MAY TORRES

May Torres is a freelance writer, born in New York City. At a young age, she became fascinated by all things supernatural, as well as unexplained phenomena. She cites Stephen King as her favorite author, heavily influencing her love of the written word. One of things she admires about King’s writing is his character development. His characters have a way of staying with the reader long after they’ve finished reading. Torres appreciates the detail that goes into creating memorable characters and has made a point to incorporate this in her writing.

 

As a reader May Torres enjoys reading fast-paced stories and works to make her writing the same. She prides herself on getting to the point in a timely manner while not leaving the reader wanting for more. Her informal writing style welcomes the reader into her world inviting them to get comfortable and enjoy the ride.  Her rich experiences growing up as the only child of a single mother, helped to forge an imaginative spirit. Her writing is a mixture of life experiences and pure imagination.

 

Although her love of the supernatural is the driving force in her writing, May aspires to branch out into different genres. However, her first love will always be horror. She enjoys the idea of being able to scare readers with the images her words create. Although bewitched by supernatural and paranormal worlds, May also likes the idea of finding the horror in ordinary, everyday life.

 

Ms. Torres is herself a single mother to a son and daughter. They have enriched her life beyond words. In fact, they are a major factor in her decision to write and get published. She always made sure they believed that they could achieve anything they put their mind too. What better way to instill this, than to lead by example? May’s daughter is a huge book worm with many titles in her collection, but none with characters like her; meaning, young and Latina. May Torres wrote her first novel, Enchanted Island with her daughter in mind. Enchanted Island not only features a Latina protagonist, but the story itself is centered around Latino history.

 

Much to her delight, Torres’ daughter devoured it. She intends to keep writing for the young adult audience while also trying to captivate the adult reader. She hopes to be the kind of writer that keeps her readers on their toes, never knowing what to expect. After completing her first novel, May Torres was faced with the arduous task of getting it published. She struggled with the fear of her work being turned into something she would not recognize, in order to conform to publisher’s strict guidelines. She made the decision to independently publish and, with a friend and fellow writer, decided to start a company aimed at preserving the integrity of the author’s work.

 

MayTorres currently resides in New York with her children and their two dogs Luna and Major.
